Mission of El Centro

The mission of El Centro is to provide support for the Latinx/é, Afro-Latinx/é, Chicanx/é, Hispanic community at CSU and Fort Collins. Job Description

As a Community Engagement Coordinator, you would be doing the following: 

Front Desk Hosting 

  • Represent and promote the mission of El Centro in person and though virtual formats   
  • Create and maintain a culture of value, affirmation, intersectionality and support within El Centro   
  • Committing to a flexible schedule so you can help staff the front desk 
  • Greeting visitors, ensuring guests check-in, answering phone calls, responding to emails 
  • Providing tours of the office 

Community Engagement 

  • Responding to emails in a way consistent with our mission and purpose 
  • Creating marketing materials via Canva, photoshop or InDesign 
  • Collectively update and post on El Centro’s Social Media (Instagram, Facebook, Tik Tok etc.)   
  • Marketing Coordinators are responsible for creating and generating social media content that promotes El Centro and Inclusive Excellence Centers’ Events.  And, create content that provides educational resources about issues that impact the Latinx/é, Afro-Latinx/é, Chicanx/é, Hispanic, Multiracial community. 

Training and Professional Development 

Actively contribute and participate in the following: 

  • Attend, and be on time to, weekly Marketing Team Meetings & El Centro All-Staff Meetings  

Holistic Center Assistance 

  • Support professional staff with administrative projects    
  • Help implement and staff El Centro programming (Latinx Heritage Month, Día de Muertos Celebrations, Latinx in Activism Week, El Centro Retreat, Welcome Week Programming, La Conexión End of the Year Celebration, etc.)   

Qualifications 

Availability  

  • Able to work 10 hours, minimum, per week between 8:00 AM and 5:00 PM AND maintain the work schedule you negotiate with your supervisor 
  • Able to make a one-year commitment to the position 
  • Must attend additional training hours August 12- August 16, 2024, IN PERSON  
  • Must attend Spring Training in January 2025 
  • Must attend the SOMOS Latinx Graduation in early May 2025   

Eligibility 

  • Be a current undergraduate student at Colorado State University and will be receiving work study during employment (what is work study?) 
  • Already submitted or planning to submit a FAFSA by March 2024 
  • Receiving a Work Study Award, which is required for hire and to remain employed 
  • Have work authorization 

Required Skills 

  • Demonstrated ability to co-create and uphold an environment of inclusivity, community, intersectionality and support

Job Description 

The mission of El Centro is to provide support for the Latinx/é, Afro-Latinx/é, Chicanx/é, Hispanic, Multiracial community at CSU and Fort Collins. We do this by encouraging student engagement, academic success, cultural pride, empowerment, and volunteer/leadership opportunities. We strive to promote an inclusive environment that focuses on awareness and understanding of the Latinx experience.  

La Conexión is a peer-mentorship program for first year and transfer Latinx students with a focus on creating a strong sense of community, cultural pride, student engagement, and academic excellence at CSU. La Conexión supports Latinx students by helping them feel connected to campus through social, emotional, and academic support throughout their first year at CSU. Family Leaders are responsible for establishing community by planning weekly activities for a group of first-year students, as well as meeting with them individually throughout the academic school year. Overall, Family Leaders support first-year and transfer students with academic, social, and personal transitions. Pa’lante! 

As a La Conexión Familia Leader, you would be doing the following: 

Group Engagement 

  • Plan and facilitate weekly, inclusive, family group sessions for a group of 10-15 new CSU students focused on helping new students transition to the university, utilize campus resources, encouraging cultural empowerment, and establishing a sense of belonging. 
  • Intentionally develop a sense of community that is inclusive and supports a diverse community of Latinx students. 

Individual Student Outreach and Support 

  • Develop a mentoring relationship with students that is inclusive of a student’s diverse identities, strengths, and needs 
  • Meet with all student mentees (10-15) on a one-on-one basis throughout the academic year to support their personal transition to CSU. 
  • Devote time to individual check ins and follow up with student mentees based on individual needs 
  • Support students in crisis through problem-solving, resource referrals, and timely communication with El Centro staff 

Connection to Campus 

  • Encourage alumni to attend La Conexión programs and events. 
  • Encourage alumni to attend El Centro events 

Training and Professional Development 

Actively contribute and participate in the following: 

  • Attend, and be on time to, weekly individual meetings with your supervisor 
  • Attend, and be on time to, weekly Family Leader Team Meetings & El Centro All-Staff Meetings  
  • Attend all La Conexión Large Family events (typically one per month)

  • Be able to work in person in order to ensure the office is open Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, except when the University is Closed (Memorial Day, Juneteenth, and July 4th)  
  • Greeting visitors, ensuring guests check-in, answering phone calls, responding to emails  
  • Providing tours of the office  

Community Engagement  

  • Responding to emails in a way consistent with our mission and purpose  
  • Creating marketing materials via Canva, photoshop or InDesign  
  • Collectively update and post on El Centro’s Social Media (Instagram, Facebook, Tik Tok etc.)    

Academic Year Preparation  

  • Help identify priorities for the upcoming academic year for El Centro in terms of our programming, online presence, and physical space from an intersectional perspective.  
  • Help identify priorities and begin planning for National Latinx/e Heritage Month and First-Four Weeks Programming from an intersectional perspective, which includes the identification of presenters/vendors that meet our outcomes for the month, the identification of events and programs that meet the month’s outcomes, etc.  

Ram Orientation Support  

  • Represent El Centro and all Student Diversity Programs and Services at Ram Orientation tabling events, which occur Monday through Friday, throughout the summer, for both incoming first-year students and transfer students.  
  • Arrive on time to all tabling events and be prepared to speak on behalf of our offices.  
  • Answer questions incoming students and their family/support network have about our offices.  

La Conexión Outreach  

  • Work with the El Centro staff to identify candidates eligible for El Centro’s Peer Mentoring Program.  
  • Engage in ongoing outreach to potential candidates through phone calls and following up on inquiries.  
  • Design marketing for the mentoring program and help identify the important messages that need to be conveyed about the program.  

Holistic Center Assistance  

  • Actively contribute and participate in the following:  
  • Attend, and be on time to, weekly Marketing Team Meetings & El Centro All-Staff Meetings   
  • Support professional staff with administrative projects

  • Days off can be arranged based on office coverage, which is shared between all staff working over the summer (3 full-time staff and 1 part-time staff member)
