Latinx/é Activism Week 2024

Background is a light yellow. The border is made up of a dark orange sun burst. In the middle is a picture of the band 2MX2.

Latinx/é Activism Week is a collaborative effort between El Centro and a variety of campus partners that commemorates the historical contributions of Cesar Chavez, Dolores Huerta Larry Itliong, Philip Vera Cruz, and the farmworkers rights movements. Programming during this week seeks to honor our history while uplifting the contemporary Latinx/é activists, advocates and leaders who continue to contribute to advocacy for civil and worker’s rights in Colorado, Fort Collins and beyond.

Our hope is that CSU students and community members engaging in this programming can reflect and learn skills regarding different forms of advocacy and activism while building upon our historical legacies.

portrait of Tim Hernandez in Denver

Join us with special guest, Tim Hernández, for conversation over a shared meal about collective action, liberation movements and activism.  Tim is a teacher, community organizer, and Chicano from the Northside of Denver. He currently represents the Northside and Westside of Denver in the Colorado General Assembly. He made statewide headlines when he was fired from his job at North High School in 2022, sparking the largest student walkouts in the last 50 years for Chicano studies, Chicano teachers, and calling for more teachers of color in Denver Public Schools. He is 27 years old, the first member of Gen Z to serve in the Colorado House, and a committed fighter for fully funded public schools, attainable and affordable housing, and preventing gun violence in Colorado.

Fund Your Latinx Activism Week Project:

This year, to honor student activism, we are collecting proposals from student(s) that aim to make a difference in their community.  Proposals can include community service projects, artwork, or anything else that celebrates the theme of Latinx/é Activism Week 2024.

Projects should focus on activism, coalition building, solidarity, and the power of community; designed to support and uplift the Latinx/é community. We want students engaged in solidarity work that centers the community at the heart of social change and liberation. Successful applications should demonstrate elements of Harro’s Cycle of Liberation (2008).

  • Application opens: 02/19/2024
  • The proposal deadline is: 03/01/2024
  • Accepted applications will be announced and notified by 03/08/2024
