Join us as we kick off Latinx/e Heritage Month with DJ Von Kiss. She is a phenomenal DJ/Producer based out of Southern California. Growing up in San Francisco with a music/dance loving Mom, she was exposed to various musical genres such as Freestyle, Booty Bass, House, Hip Hop, Funk, Oldies, Banda, Cumbias… to name a few. She has played alongside artists such as Fedde Le Grande, CarnagSete, Mikix The Cat, LMFAO, DJ Funk, Brenmar, Shortee, 6Blocc, Caspa, Trolley Snatcha, Lil Kim, Rye Rye, Keoki, Cazwell, Barrington Levy, Redman, Problem and many more!

Every year, we observe Hispanic and Latinx Heritage Month (September 15th – October 15th) as a way to celebrate the cultures, contributions, stories, and accomplishments of millions of Latinx and Hispanic people who, over the last centuries, have helped shaped the United States.  We are hosting a community celebration filled with music, art, stories, food and more! LHM Keynote Speaker: Julissa Arce

In collaboration with RAMEvents and WGAC, this year our LHM Keynote speaker is Julissa Arce. Julissa Arce is a writer, activist, and social changemaker. She is the nationally best-selling author of My (Underground) American Dream and Someone Like Me. Her writing has appeared in the New York Times, TIME Magazine, CNN, CNBC, Vogue and other outlets. Her newest book, You Sound Like a White Girl: The Case for Rejecting Assimilation, is a powerful dual polemic and manifesto against the myth that assimilation leads to happiness and belonging for immigrants in America. Instead, she calls for a celebration of our uniqueness, our origins, our heritage, and the beauty of the differences that actually make us Americans.

History Comes Alive El Vaquero, America’s First Cowboy

Learn about El Vaquero in this living history show performed by Angel Vigil. El Vaquero’s story shows the origins and development of traditional cowboy practices in the American West. As El Vaquero talks about his clothing, tools, and lifeways, a clear picture emerges identifying his traditional Spanish practices as the source of the daily activities of today’s ranch worker. His stories illuminate the contrasts between the romanticized Hollywood depiction of the cowboy with the realities of the real working cowboy.

Join the Poudre Libraries!

Mole (from the Nahuatl molli) is a family of dishes made in the South region of Mexico. It’s usually served with guajolote (turkey) or chicken but can be also offered with a vast array of proteins. The recipes always include a blend of many ingredients (dried chiles, fruits, spices and seasonings) that gives the dish a complex and deep flavor. Join us in this online bilingual cooking class as we celebrate Hispanic and Latinx Heritage Month with a chicken mole inspired by the one served for celebrations in the state of Puebla in Mexico, one of the richest cuisines in the country.

Participants must provide their own ingredients and tools.

Lunch with Latinx/e Leaders: Carmen Rivera

One of the first things Carmen tells folks is that she’s from northern New Mexico because where she’s from is fundamental to who she is in all contexts. As a first-generation college student, she earned her Bachelor’s degree in Mexican American Studies and Spanish from the University of Northern Colorado. She then went on to earn her Master’s degree in Student Affairs in Higher Education as well as her PhD in Higher Education Leadership from Colorado State University. Her higher education career began when she worked for the Upward Bound program. She continued to work with TRiO programs for over 13 years then transitioned to international education as the Director of Student Experience at INTO CSU for several years. Dr. Rivera currently serves as an Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs and co-chair of the Student Affairs in Higher Education Master’s program at CSU. Additionally, she’s a faculty member for the Social Justice Training Institute and a consultant in the areas of diversity, equity, inclusion, and leadership. One of her most important roles is raising her two super awesome sons with her super awesome wife. She loves 90’s R&B, traveling, cooking, and is obsessed with all things Frida Kahlo.

Platicas

Platicas (Conversations) are a student-facilitated dialogue series for students to discuss current issues and topics that impact the Latinx/e community. This is meant to be an engaging and interactive space where participants are encouraged to delve into critical dialogue and learning regarding the topic of the week. Past topics have included: Social Class in the Latinx Community, Anti-Blackness, Colorism, Mental Health, Privilege, Afro-Latinx Identity. Topics are selected by El Centro staff and we always welcome any feedback/suggestions for topics that would be critical for discussion.

Todos Juntos

Todos Juntos is a program run through El Centro specifically for graduate students. The goal of Todos Juntos is to create a positive environment for Latinx/e graduate students to make connections and build a community. Todos Juntos has monthly meetings that focus on a variety of topics including: identity and what it means to be a Latinx/e grad student at CSU, Latinx/e graduate student experiences within each college, challenges, involvement, and professional development opportunities on campus.

Borderlands Speaker: Sonia Guiñansaca

The Borderlands Speaker is an intentional collaboration between the Pride Resource Center, El Centro and Ram Events to honor the overlap of Latinx Heritage Month and LGBTQ+ History Month.  

Sonia Guiñansaca is an international award winning queer migrant poet, cultural organizer and social justice activist. They emerged as a national leader in the migrant artistic and political communities where they coordinated and participated in groundbreaking civil disobedience actions. Guiñansaca helped build some of the largest undocumented organizations in the US, including co-founding some of the first artistic projects by and for undocumented writers and artists. Sonia has worked for over a decade in both policy and cultural efforts building equitable infrastructures for migrant artists. They have been awarded residencies and fellowships from Voices of Our Nation Arts Foundation, Poetry Foundation, British Council, Creative Time, and the Hemispheric Institute for Performance & Politics.

In Lak’ech Dance Academy is a safe and welcoming space that promotes artistic expression and collective healing within the queer and trans community. Together, we use dance as a tool for self-care and healing. We create beautiful bonds with one another, as we believe in the power that comes from being part of an inclusive community.

In Lak’ech Dance is more than a dance academy. It is an inclusive community where people can feel free to be their true, authentic selves and claim their identity with pride and honor while reaching personal goals through dance. Everyone is accepted and loved as they are.  

Join El Centro, Pride and BAACC on learning about Salsa dance history and moves from In Lak’ech Dance Academy! This is a two-night event with our last day having an extended time to dance and enjoy good music. In Lak’ech Dance Academy is a safe and welcoming space that promotes artistic expression and collective healing within the queer and trans community.
